A Note about Spelling
Now that your child is ready for first grade, spelling becomes an important part of the language arts experience. First your child will experiment with “inventive” or “temporary” spelling. Then your child will begin to learn certain conventions of spelling (phonics), as well as how to correctly spell many basic sight words. As more words and skills are committed to memory, you will soon see your child begin to use some of the basic sight words in his/her writing, along with using many of the sounds we have talked about in class. Your child will not spell every word correctly before second grade, but his/her spelling should be very readable.
