Math looks different in the classroom compared to several years ago. Now you will see children acting out stories by drawing pictures, counting objects, using a number line or number grid, or sharing with a friend how he/she solved the problem. Children need to understand math instead of memorizing rules. If rules are memorized with no understanding a day will come when math will become very difficult. Allowing children to go through different stages of learning will help.
Encourage your child to share how he/she came up with the answer to a problem. It is OK to share other ways but do not make them think there is only one way to solve the problem.
Allow children to: · Act out the problems by drawing pictures or using objects.
· Counting on their fingers or using their fingers to hold the place for a number in the story.
· Using related facts - I know 3+7 = 10 so 17+3 = 20.
· Then guide them to memorize the facts.
